Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us
by Robert D. Hare
Robert D. Hare’s Without Conscience is an excellent read and great comprehensive overview of the world of Psychopaths. It is extremely well-written and simplified enough for laypersons to fully understand all of Hare’s research and findings. Most academic works are usually full of jargon and difficult for the everyday person to read and understand, but not this book.
Hare clearly and evidently wanted this information to be readily accessible and available to all. His many years of research and interactions with actual psychopaths led him to develop an understanding of this pathology so intricate that many people, including his peers, see him as an authority on the subject. This book only helped elevate him further in his career because of its simplicity and accessibility to all.
In the book, Hare does a wonderful job at explaining and clarifying the terms “psychopath,” “sociopath” and “anti-social personality disorder” since the three are usually used interchangeably. Although they refer to similar disorders/pathologies, Hare illustrates how they aren’t the same and why they shouldn’t be presented as such. He also explains how he developed the “Psychopathic Checklist,” which is administered to individuals, as a diagnostic tool to formalize how clinical diagnoses are made.
Aside from the checklist, Hare does a phenomenal job at explaining psychopaths in complete detail chapter after chapter. He paints the perfect picture of a psychopath’s makeup and general inability to relate empathetically to others. He also does a great job at showing how these people can range from being relatively ‘normal’ but emotionally barren to becoming serial killers. The broad spectrum of psychopaths is due, I learned from the reading, in large part of the upbringing of the person. If the person’s upbringing was ideal and ‘safe’ then they will probably grow-up to live a relatively normal life; however, if their upbringing wasn’t ideal then society would have yet another criminal on their hands.
Although most of Hare’s research and career was involving the criminal world, he does a good job at identifying the fact that not all psychopaths are criminals or become criminals. While many people surely think that is the case, the truth is that many go about their daily lives causing chaos and hurting those people they come across by wrecking emotional havoc in their lives. These might not break the law, but they are emotionally abusive, cruel, manipulative, and controlling to whoever crosses their path; be it a family member, co-worker, or boss. Their inability to create emotional bonds with others is a major component in their apparent behavior towards others.
Hare explains that because of Hollywood and movies, like American Psycho, people have a tendency to think of all psychopaths as physically violent, criminal, and/or serial killers who are out to hurt as many people as possible. This, as we learn from the book, couldn’t be further from the truth. Even though many psychopaths do commit crimes and are in penal system, they aren’t the majority, nor do these violent psychopaths makeup a large percentage of psychopaths in general. This being another reason why I found this book so great and useful, with so much information about these individuals and the telltale signs of their eminent danger, people could be better equipped to distinguish them in their everyday lives.
Being able to recognize a psychopath in your life is very important because this way you might be able to avoid some of the damage/chaos that they are sure to cause you. However, Hare does tell his readers that a clinical diagnosis made by someone trained in the “Psychopathic Checklist” is the best way to truly learn if someone is in fact a psychopath. People just shouldn’t assume a person is one if they believe it to be true, because as he details in one of his chapters, mislabeling a person a psychopath could cause irreparable damage to that person’s life.
Another reason I would highly recommend this book would be the case histories and personal stories Hare included within the text. Some case studies included were from Hare’s personal file and very interesting indeed. They gave the reader an all access pass into the mind and dealings with prior patients of Hare. Aside from these, he also included personal stories/statements from other individuals who submitted writings to him about their interactions with psychopaths and other stories about his researchers’ interaction with their patients. These only added more depth to the reading and really allowed the reader to get a more personal feel to dealing with psychopaths on a daily basis.
Overall, Without Conscience was a very enjoyable and enlightening read. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in psychopathology as a way to ease into the literature. Since Hare made his book simple enough for laypersons to read and understand, people would benefit from reading this book first, before getting into the more academic readings.

Wells' Is Back!
The Ghost War by Alex Berenson
Berenson has done it again! I picked up The Ghost War wondering if it would be able to keep me reading without being a duplicate of his first novel, The Faithful Spy. However, soon after starting it, I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed.
The Ghost War was similar to The Faithful Spy, while being vastly different at the same time. Berenson was able to develop a plot that incorporated his previous work, but also created a new world of danger for his characters, mainly John Wells.
We meet Wells again doing 125+mph on his Honda bike in the wee hours of the morning, trying to find some excitement in his life after everything that happened in the last chapters of The Faithful Spy. We quickly learn that he doesn’t do much of anything these days, except these rides he does in order to feel alive.
What makes Wells such an intriguing character, is the fact that he isn’t your average protagonist. He doesn’t love the attention/glory he earned from his previous adventure in The Faithful Spy, nor does he want to be treated differently. He actually wants to continue helping the government with their missions and fighting. Wells is truly an interesting character. His thoughts, wants, and ideas, are not that of an average man; which makes for a very interesting read.
I would suggest reading The Faithful Spy first, because of many references in The Ghost War to it, but you won’t regret it. Both are great books and I’m looking forward to picking up the next one in the Wells series.

Nightmare in Mortal Kombat
Just when I thought I was done with this game, they go and do this. Who would have EVER thought, they would go and do this? I surely did not.
On August 9th, Warner Bros will make the one and only, Freddy Krueger, from Elm Street, available for download to use in Mortal Kombat! The trailer below shows his entrance and moves; from the looks of it, he's going to be badass.
Wouldn't you agree? This will ensure I pick up this game again and dust the cover to check out Freddy's gameplay for myself.

Riddle Me This!
Well, not really a riddle, but more of a question, WHO ELSE CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS GAME?!
Batman: Arkham Asylum was an awesome game and the first (in my opinion) to give Batman the proper city, action, and gameplay he deserved. Therefore, a second game was expected and the team over at Rocksteady did not disappoint. They definitely had me with the original trailer, but now they've sealed the deal with these follow up trailers.
The first one shows us that The Riddler will continue to test Batman's intelligence and he even ups the ante by adding incidents and traps. Check out The Riddler trailer below:
Aside from The Riddler, Rocksteady has also released a trailer showing two other villains below!
Who else do you think they will be including? Think that's all? Is there such a thing as adding to many bad guys? Weigh in below!
You can expect to see Batman: Arkham City in stores on 10.21.2011. I CAN'T WAIT!
Peace,

They're At It Again
Just discovered two more reboots coming to a screen near you. How do you feel about these?
First up we have a remake of Thundercats for Cartoon Network premiering on July 29th, 2011 at 8/7c. While I never really followed the original series, I do know that these Cats look mighty weak compared to the original ones (probably because the Cats are now in their teens or twenties, apparently). Regardless, I might check it out to see what's the hype about. I came across this 9 minute leaked footage thanks to the team over at ScreenRant.com, check it out!
Now, this other surprise was a real treat! It isn't really a reboot, but in fact a new season of Beavis and Butt-Head starting this Fall! Now if the trailer below doesn't make you laugh hysterically, I don't know what's wrong with you.
I'm looking forward to checking these two out; what about you fine people? Let me know!

Post-Power Castro
The Prison Letters of Fidel Castro
By Fidel Castro & Luis Conte Aguero
What an amazing read! If one is able to push aside all the negative things Castro has done over the years and just read these letters with no prejudice, one can truly marvel at this wonderful piece of work!
His writing and ideals (at the time) were truly inspiring and something anyone can really appreciate. His writing was a pleasant surprise, due to its intense and honest feel. In these letters, Castro appears to the reader as an honest, brave, and loyal revolutionary, and not the brutal tyrant that ruled Cuba or 50 years.
The reader will be surprised by an unedited view at Castro’s opinions, thoughts, and wants for Cuba and the Cuban people expressed in these letters to his friends and loved ones. Reading Castro’s feelings toward Batista’s regime and rule, makes me wonder what exactly caused him to change his views and become the ruthless dictator that appears to be entirely against all of the things expressed in these letters. Guess one can only wonder and speculate.

Vega's Religious Journey
The Altar of My Soul: The Living Traditions of Santeria
by Marta Moreno Vega
What an intriguing account of one woman’s journey in life and into the traditions of Santeria. Dr. Vega’s beautifully written memoir gives readers an excellent look into the actual belief system that is Yoruba, but better known as Santeria.
This book is a must read for anyone studying religion, religious history, theology, or just interested in Afro-Cuban religious systems/beliefs. Dr. Vega does a wonderful job at dispelling many myths that are propelled by Western media and societies about African based religions being withcraft, paganist, and/or devil worshipping in this work.
For those people looking for an in-depth book on Santeria, this might not be it. Although it does a beautiful job portraying the religion and it’s beliefs (along with some ceremonies), this is Dr. Vega’s personal memoir. So naturally it is about her life and many details that aren’t necessarily related to Santeria.
Regardless, it was an enjoyable read and Dr. Vega’s journey is truly amazing. She does a great job of illustrating a spiritual journey and the importance it can have on people’s life. I would highly recommend this book for those people who are interested in religious writings. Enjoy!

The Beautiful History of Cigars!
The Cigar: An Illustrated History of Fine Smoking
by Barnaby Conrad III
This book is a must for anybody who calls himself (or herself) a cigar enthusiast. The Cigar by Conrad is a wonderfully written short look at the history of cigars and those who enjoyed them. While this book is rich with quotes and famous people who enjoyed cigars, it does lack detail other books out there might offer those who are already familiar with cigars.
However, that’s the beauty of Conrad’s work. This coffee table read is direct and to the point for anyone trying to learn the basics of cigars and their history. It’s a must have for any smoke room or man cave where the guys will commune and enjoy their own cigars together.
So, in short, if you enjoy cigars and are looking for a quick read explaining in light detail the history of cigars; The Cigar is a safe bet. One can easily finish this book in an afternoon of indulgence with some Cohibas and whiskey in your man cave.

Reboot That Could Work
I'm usually not a fan of reboots and tend to believe that originals should not be, well, redone. History has taught us that reboots usually end in failure and hurting, most of all, the fans who pay to see them. Tis being the reason many people no longer go for reboots and/or remakes.
Unless, that is, a trailer like the one below comes along. This new trailer for The Three Musketeers which is scheduled to hit a theater near you on October 14th, looks pretty damn good. You have Orlando Bloom in an evil role (must different from his Pirates' character) and the lovely Milla Jovovich doing what she does best. Check out the trailer:
While I'm still not entirely sold on using 3D in movies, we'll see how this one will turn out. I like the vision that this version of the Musketeers appears to be heading in. What do you think? Weigh in below!
