Hot Topic: Education!

Education is important. It is the backbone of our society and our future generations. It's also one of the current hot topics in the U.S. today, with documentaries, magazines, and newspapers giving it major attention.

TIME is just one magazine that covered this issue extremely well. They dedicated their entire National Service issue to Education. Check out their two articles here: Waiting for "Superman": A Call to Action for Our SchoolsHow to Recruit Better Teachers.

According to the first article, the US is ranked as the 5th country in cumulative K-12 education spending per student in '06. However, out of the 30 developed countries surveyed, the US students ranked 24th in science literacy & 25th in math literacy. So how is it that classes are smaller, per-pupil spending has increased, but student performance has not improved? We have a 16:1 student to teacher ratio in 2007, compared to 22:1 in 1970; a 123% increase in per-pupil education spending in the US from 1971-2006 yet a 0% change in academic performance among 17-year-olds from 1971-2004 in a national test for reading. **

These statistics are a bit ridiculous if you ask me. I can't fanthom spending more, lowering class sizes, and having no change in academic performance. Clearly, there is something wrong here. Is it the kids? Society? Principles? Materials? Textbooks? Teachers? While I'm not trying to play the blame game, because I'm sure the reason is a combination of these issues, I do want to focus on something that is a growing problem.

In the US, teaching has begun being seen as less of a prestigious career and more of a community service, done for a year or two. Unlike becoming a Doctor, Lawyer, or successful CEO; teaching is seen as hard-work for little pay and even less recognition. This is where their second article comes into play. The recruitment of better teachers is definitely a MUST! While there are plenty of great teachers out there; there are more who are lazy, not dedicated, and just keep the job for the benefits.

Another reason people don't look at teaching as a serious career is because of pay. A survey of college students, proves that they expected garbage collectors to make more then teachers. Wrong. The average annual wages of kindergarten and elementary-middle-and high school teachers are $47,100 to $51,180. The bottom 10% make $30,970 to $34,280 BUT the top 10% make $75,190 to $80,970 annually**.

Now, I personally know some teachers who are currently starting their careers, and I wish them the best of luck! They will become great additions to the teaching force and touch many student's lives, I'm sure. These are the people who give me some hope of a better future with a better education system.

However, we must also play our part at home. We must focus on our kids' education and strive to help them throughout the years. For those of us who are educated and successful in our careers, we can also offer support in schools and mentoring programs to help show students the advantages of continuing education and doing well.

An excellent example I can think of is the seriously dedicated and driven group of individuals that make up LYHEP (Latino Youth for Higher Education Program) in New York City. These young professionals have come together to develop a program that is focused on promoting higher education among Latinos and other minorities within our community. To learn more about them, check out their website here: LYHEProgram.org!

Lastly, TIME does a great job of wrapping up their coverage with an article on other ways people can help out our education system. Make sure to check it out here: How to Help.

Weekend At The Movies - Nov. 19th'10

It's that time of the week again folks! The one day we all look forward to and anxiously await, so that we can enjoy two days of freedom before entering work again on Monday. Well, here are the picks to enjoy in the theaters this weekend!

First we have Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt.1 hitting theaters. As I'm sure you're all familiar with Harry Potter and his lengthy story/history, I'll spare you the details. The one thing I will say is, this movie looks dark! Much darker then the previous films. Just check out the trailer below for yourself.

The other pick for this weekend is The Next Three Days. Simply put, this movie is about a seemingly perfect family, whose life gets turned up-side-down when Lara, the wife, gets arrested for a murder she says she didn't commit. After getting their final appeal denied, John, the husband, develops an elaborate plan to get his wife out of prison and get his family back together. Intriguing to say the least. Check out the trailer.

Check out the earnings below from my picks last week:
Unstoppable beat out Due Date and earned $22,688,457 taking the #2 spot.
Morning Glory earned $9,203,266 taking the #5 spot.

Weekend At The Movies - Nov. 12th'10

T.G.I.F.!!! And the weekend is here Ladies & Gents! Know what that means? Drinks, movies, parties, lounges, drinks, brunches, lunches, and dinners are all around the corner. Here are the picks I recommend this weekend.

First we have Morning Glory with Rachel McAdams, who I must say is gorgeous! This movies is about a hard-working TV producer who, after losing her job, starts working at a low-ranking national morning news show called "Daybreak". She takes on the task of revitalizing the show and must find a way to save her job, reputation, and a developing relationship with her fellow producer. Check out the trailer and judge for yourself.

Secondly, we have Unstoppable, which is about an old-timer engineer and a rookie conductor who try to stop a half-mile-long freight train, that has enough combustible liquids and poisonous gas to be deemed a WMD, from crashing into a nearby city. Now, I suggest this movie for three reason, (1) This is based on a true story I saw on the news a while ago. (2) Denzel Washington is an amazing actor and rarely does a poor job or a poor script. (3) I am really interested in seeing how these writers were able to pull off a movie revolving around two movie trains. Guess we'll see.

My pick's last week were right on the money! Check out the earnings below:
Megamind beat out SAW 3D and earned $46,016,833 taking the #1 spot.
Due Date earned $32,689,406 taking the #2 spot.
& For Colored Girls earned $19,497,324 taking the #3 spot.

The NEW Shining

I remember seeing The Shining a few years ago for the first time and realizing what a truly brilliant film it was. Now, a few days ago I came across this video on youtube titled The Shining Recut and I just had to share it!

This video truly shows what editing and a new soundtrack can do for a film. I say you watch for yourself what I mean!

Now go ahead and show this to someone who hasn't seen The Shining yet. Then you go and let them watch The Shining and make sure to watch their reaction carefully as they notice it isn't what they expected. They might not find it very funny, but I'm sure you'll get a couple of laughs out of it!

Weekend At The Movies - Nov. 5th'10

Here we go again! This weekend is BIG for movies. There are three movies I want to highlight, which I feel will cater to all of you movie-goers out there.

First we'll take a look at Due Date. So in this film we have, Peter Highman (Downey Jr.) who is an expectant father, whose wife's due date is only five days away. As you can assume, he can't take his flight and must road trip from Atlanta to LA with aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis). The ride home is filled with all sorts of shenanigans, which are sure to stir up laughter among the audience. Although I've heard some people say they don't like Zack or find him funny, I find him pretty comedic and think this film will finally solidify his place in Hollywood.

Next we have the family friendly Megamind! This animated family comedy is about the world's most brilliant super-villain, who has always failed in his attempts to conquer Metro City because of the city's superhero "Metro Man". Then things start looking up for Megamind when he finally beats "Metro Man" and makes the superhero retire. Unfortunately, he finds himself incredibly bored since his nemesis has retired. To make matters worse, there's a new villain in town who begins destroying everything. So it appears Megamind will have to become the superhero and save the day!

Lastly, we have For Colored Girls. This film is based on Ntozake Shange's Obie Award-winning play, which is a poetic exploration of what it is to be of color and a female in our world and society today. Definitely a must-see in my book.

Last weekend's records aren't surprising:
SAW 3D beat out Paranormal Activity 2 and earned $22,530,123 taking the #1 spot.
RED earned $10,729,636 taking the #3 spot.
